A non-muslim posed a question about muslims befriending non-muslims. He quoted Surah 5:80 to show that muslims shouldn't befriend jews and christians. Is that true? Does that mean we can't have jewish and christain friends? Surah 5:80 is interpreted to mean:
"Thou seest many of them making friends with those who disbelieve. Surely ill for them is that which they themselves send on before them : that Allah will be wroth with them and in the doom they will abide." (Surah 5:80)
this question was given 5 months ago, and I still can't find the answer for it. PLEASE HELP! THANKS!

Regarding your question about taking a non Muslim as a friends, this is my answer. Actually this is not the only verse which arouse misconception among non Muslim..there is another verse which is 5:51 .Actually, there is some mistake in certain translation of the Holy Quran especially in the old translation like Abdullah Yusuf Ali. The original word that was used in both verse 5:51 and 5:80 is 'auliya' which derived from the word 'waliyyun' or 'wali' which means protector and not friends. In Islam, we have to believe that the only protector or savior for us is Allah alone.
Islam did ask us to treat people kindly as long as they did not stop the Muslim from worshiping the almighty GOD and did not chase the Muslim out of his country. you can refer this in [60:8-9]
do you still remember the reason of why prophet Muhammad was sent down to the mankind.[21:107] it is that he would be a bless to all the mankind including non Muslim. the bless is the two syahadah. so if we did not befriend with non Muslim, how can we spread the words? Recall back, why Al-Quran was sent down[25:1]. It is also to warn all the people which is include the Muslim as well as the non Muslim.
