A BRIEF OUTLINE OF BUDDHISM, ITS CONCEPT AND PRACTICE
BY
DR. TIN MAUNG AUNG (LT. COLONEL, RTD)
Buddhism has been time tested and tried for over more than twenty centuries. It does not profess to be, yet is considered by many, as the first world religion, the only one embraced at one time by the peoples of many nations.
It follows a path of virtue and righteousness, encompasses, love, compassion, kindness, tolerance, patience and perseverance with no set religious rituals for initiation.
It lays down no commandments and demands no obedience or any form of worship to a deity. The power of Buddhism lies not in prayer, but in a self accorded code of conduct cultivated of high moral values and a personal practice of constant mindfulness and meditation.
To accept the fact that nothing is permanent, to put an end to all kinds of carnal cravings, to remain free of all forms of personal attachments, to acknowledge that to exist itself is a suffering, as abstract as it may all seem to be,
Buddhism, with its acceptance and understanding of the three gems, the four noble truths, the eightfold path, and the middle way, offers deliverance and freedom from all forms of suffering and a promise of the ultimate peace and tranquility.
